Abstract

US Department of Transport Volpe Center performed an independent evaluation of the Roadway Departure Crash Warning (RDCW) system field operational test. The RDCW system provides warnings to drivers to alert them of the need to make adjustments so their vehicle can remain in the lane or slow their speed to accommodate an upcoming curve in the road. This study focuses on analysis of driver acceptance of the RDCW system using subjective data.Overall, drivers considered the RDCW system is easy to understand and learn, made them more aware of their vehicle position and upcoming curves, and agreed that RDCW will increase driving safety. Drivers who had positive experiences with RDCW and its warnings became advocates of this safety technology during the debriefing session and focus group meeting.
