Abstract

Highway safety must be built in, not added on. Increasing pavement friction, providing breakaway devices and attenuation devices are at best remedial treatments. Basic geometric design to reduce to a minimum the possibility of a vehicle's leaving the roadway is the most fundamental responsibility of the design engineer. The secondary responsibility is to insure the safety of those drivers who leaved the traveled way.
