Abstract

In order to study the working of the New Zealand right-hand rule under a complete range of traffic volumes and turning percentages, a typical intersection was simulated by a symbolic computer model. Accelerations, velocities and vehicle positioning were measured, together with the sizes of gaps drivers require to cross or join opposing streams. The right-hand rule appears to function efficiently at moderate traffic volumes and normal turning proportions but right-turning vehicles have a very adverse effect.
