Abstract

In this chapter, the authors review the psychology of the driver impairments that fatigue may produce. They will focus especially on cognitive psychological models that conceptualize driving as a task that requires active regulation of task demands. In developing the psychological theory, they will review evidence from field studies, discuss conceptual models that may capture some of the complexity of fatigue response, and outline a transactional model that sees fatigue as a relationship between the driver and the traffic environment. They will also describe the implications of the model for developing countermeasures, and finish with some general conclusions. (Author/publisher)
