Abstract

The Austrian Road Safety Board started its work in the field of driver improvement almost 25 years ago. The courses implemented at that time were rehabilitation programs for persons caught driving under the influence (of alcohol). As a result of the statistically proven efficiency of these programs and the experience in driver improvement, in 1991 the Austrian Road Safety Board was authorised by the Austrian authorities as the sole Austrian institution to carry out rehabilitation of drivers holding probationary licenses. This represents not only an important recognition of the institution's competence, but also a responsibility towards clients and the authorities. This presentation describes: the background and setting of groups courses; special qualification requirements of trainers; and the additional measures to guarantee high standards. (A)
