Abstract

This paper gives an overview of the driver safety improvement system in France. Three features are described: education, prevention and repression. Education concerns training of young drivers and compulsory driving lessons. Prevention is broken down into a description of the penalty points system and an alternative system of offering offenders against traffic laws the choice of a training course or legal proceedings. Also included here is the compulsory education of young drivers after a year of driving experience. Repressive measures are medical examinations for professional drivers, and examinations before reinstatement of a suspended driving licence.
