Abstract

One essential objective for traffic programs is the increase of traffic safety on dangerous road sections. Roadside processing techniques allow for the prevention and detection of incidents in real time. Early warning to the road users reduces violations by drivers. The used new system called ROADGUARD consists of real time roadside processing and warning with active light posts. The system was tested on a two lane single carriageway in a mountain area and a six lane dual carriageway in Portugal. High performance in automatic incident detection and real-time warning of drivers in situ could be achieved. (A)
