Abstract

A research project was initiated in the Chicago area to study the diversionary characteristics of drivers in that area. These characteristics were related to the voluntary diverting of individual drivers from their normal route used for the work trip to some other route. The reasons explored for diverting were to avoid unexpected delays and-or to decrease overall travel time. The diversion characteristics for both the trip to work and the return trip home were studied.
