Driver-related traffic information for improved road safety.

Abstract

This paper describes the positive effects of individual driver information on better road and driver safety. The paper presents the application for autonomous driver support systems based on RDS/TMC (Radio Data System/Traffic Message Channel). Applications including vehicle-positioning systems with low accuracy (an error of one to five kilometres) are especially discussed. Firstly, the need for a positioning system with low accuracy is justified. Using RDS/TMC, sixty traffic messages per minute may be transmitted. This amount of information makes it important to find solutions which: (1) automatically select the right amount of traffic information relevant to the individual driver; and (2) which individual driver; and (2) which avoid giving too much irrelevant information to the driver. This will improve both the acceptance for the new TMC and the drivers' awareness of dangerous situations. The paper also discusses the possibilities to support the driver automatically in selecting information. The paper presents criteria for the driver-specific choice of traffic information. Results are shown which prove the efficiency of supporting the driver.
