Abstract

This paper concerns the international problem of unsafe driving in the younger age group (15-24 years old). Risk factors identified are alcohol, illicit drugs, fatigue and the social effect of passengers. The issues are a psychological one of lifestyle and the complex problem of the differences between the training situation and the accident situation. A comparison of various driver training systems suggests that graduated driver training is the most promising one. This features curfews on young drivers and enforced accompaniment, and the probationary status of the driving licence constitutes repression of dangerous risk-taking behaviour. Especially mentioned are the systems in New Zealand and Quebec. For the covering abstract see ITRD E113725 (C 22328 CD-ROM).
