Abstract

Efforts in the field of road safety are often categorised as the "three E's": education, engineering and enforcement. Driver training is subsumed under "education", which includes the teaching of safe road user behaviour to schoolchildren and the improvement of road users' knowledge, attitudes and behaviour via publicity, propaganda, exhortation and, occasionally, legal sanctions. This chapter focuses largely on the contribution of novice driver training to road safety.
