Abstract

In this report, the results of PREVENT WP2 are described, in which the behavior of drivers at work zones is investigated. The behavior of drivers is important, because together with the results from WP 1 (accident typology) this work package will provide insights into what type of behaviors are related to what type of work zone accidents. When the behaviors are identified, the next step can be taken which is developing training material directed at exactly those behaviors or other aspects that are the main causes of accidents. It should be noted here that when speaking about behavior and the relation to safety, the behavior of both road users and road workers is important: both groups can make errors or mistakes which may result in (near) accidents. However, in this work package the focus is only on the behavior of drivers. As a result, the material to be developed to train road workers is directed at the anticipation of errors of drivers: not at the errors that the workers themselves might possibly make. This report is organized as follows. In Chapter 2, the methodology of the study is described. Chapter 3 provides an overview of results from the ARROWS study carried out in 1998. In chapter 4 an overview is given of behavioral studies carried out from 1998 until now. In chapter 5, training possibilities are given based on these studies and based on general behavioral typologies. In chapter 6, finally, the main conclusions are presented. (Author/publisher)
