Abstract

Both normative and pathological physiological changes in drivers and pedestrians play an important, but often subtle role in the occurrence of highway crashes and in determining their severity. Theoretically, many conditions and drugs are potentially impairing, but greatest attention should be given to conditions that occur frequently, have potential for severe impairment, actually cause severe impairment relatively often, and are associated with high exposure to the road.
