Abstract

Studies of West German traffic accident data agree that the accident causation risk expressed as a function of the age of the driver has a U- shaped curve with an upward trend for elderly car drivers aged 55 and over. It is stated that the people over 60 and older will participate more and more in traffic in the future. The current knowledge on driving ability and performance and on driving behaviour of this age group must be extended. A brief outline of a method used in a study into this, is presented.
