Abstract

A SURVEY OF MORNING PEAK DRIVING PATTERNS IN SYDNEY WAS CARRIED OUT USING AN INSTRUMENTED VEHICLE. SPEED HISTORIES WERE RECORDED AND THE DATA WERE ANALYZED TO DETERMINE THE STATISTICS AND THE EXPECTED VEHICLE EMISSIONS FOR SYDNEY. A COMPARISON WITH THE US FEDERAL DRIVING CYCLE CURRENTLY BEING USED FOR EMISSION TESTING OF MOTOR VEHICLES REVEALED THAT ROOT MEAN SQUARE ACCELERATION FOR THE SYDNEY TRAFFIC WAS HIGHER BY 28% AND EXPECTED NITRIC OXIDES EMISSIONS WERE HIGHER BY 18%. JOINT SPEED-ACCELERATION RELATIVE FREQUENCIES ALSO REVEALED DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE SYDNEY DATA AND THE US CYCLE. A DRIVING CYCLE OF 10 MIN DURATION WAS SYNTHESISED TO CLOSELY APPROXIMATE THE STATISTICS AND EMISSIONS OF THE SURVEY DATA.(Author/publisher).
