Abstract

Today's navigation systems provide dynamic route guidance for road users on the basis of online traffic information. Route optimization criteria are the shortest, fastest or the most economic route. Drivers are guided to their destination, while the time of arrival is variable depending on the actual traffic and the driver's driving behaviour. In many transport casesthe time of arrival is essential and should be fixed. This paper suggestsa new, so-called Just-in-Time navigation, where the driver is guided in such a way that the planned arrival time will be attained. In addition to the route, the vehicle's optimal velocity is an important parameter, takinginto account speed limits, traffic density and vehicle performance. The results of the traffic simulation studies have been used to develop an algorithm for Just-in-Time navigation. The new, highly efficient algorithm hasbeen implemented into an experimental system to be used as a prototype inthe driving tests for Just-in-Time navigation. These driving tests will be carried out on two reference routes to study the benefits of Just-in-Time navigation. First results have been shown that by means of Just-in-Time navigation, an acceptable punctuality in real conditions can be achieved. For the covering abstract see ITRD E134653.
