Abstract

The author of this article briefly explains why it is time to develop a uniform, nation-wide, rational approach to the assessment of drivers with visual impairments. On the basis of his clinical experience and years spent working with various US state department of transportation licensing standards, he suggests a number of criteria concerning visual functioning and driving be adopted by each State's Department of Motor Vehicle or equivalent agency. Apart from these criteria, additional comments are also included in the article.
