Since the use of studded tyres causes severe pavement wear alternative strategies are discussed in Sweden. This report presents the effects on accident rate, pavement wear. car costs and environment if the use of studded tyres was prohibited. As a basis the winter 1993-1994 is used and the predictions are for the winter 1999-2000. An assumption is that wear resistant pavements will be more common in the future. A "zero alternative" where studded tyres are allowed and are assumed to be of the lightweight type, is also presented.
