Abstract

A pneumatic linear accelerator was used to test dummy head and neck assemblies, measurements being made of head accelerations and head deflections. In this way, two commercially available necks and several experimental necks were assessed. The experimental necks were divided into three categories according to the mode of energy dissipation: external damping, internal damping, and material deformation. More realistic whole dummy tests were also carried out on a selection of necks and the results of the two series were correlated.
