DYnamic NEtwork MOdel DYNEMO : a mesoscopic traffic flow model to analyse Advanced Transport Technology ATT measures.

Abstract

Interurban measures of Advanced Transport Technology (ATT) such as variable message signs, route guidance and driver information systems via radio are continually implemented in various European countries over the past decade. Due to the massive cost of these measures authorities as well as private enterprises are interested to evaluate scenarios of possible measures to compose their effectiveness. DYNEMO (DYnamic NEtwork MOdel) is a multiple purpose simulation model which is able to analyse various types of ATT measures. A network consists to the order of up to 105 links and nodes and 103 zones. Vehicles are placed onto the network considering a static O-D matrix superseded with flow rates over time. The mesoscopic traffic flow model combines macroscopic elements (links based velocity over density) with microscopic elements (desired speed distributions for each vehicle fleet). The macroscopic element reduced the computational burden, the microscopic elements guarantee vehicle specific values for analysis. Dependent on the vehicle type various objective functions for route choice are available, e.g. travel time, distance, cost or fixed to reflect fixed message signs. Within the network numerous decision points can be set up. The route choice is recalculated to provide the driver with an update of the best remaining route. This update is usually only available for a subset of drivers to model rates of vehicle equipment and compliance. DYNEMO has been applied within various research and commercial projects. Interesting questions were tested within the BEVEI field trial on the motorway network of Nordrhein Westfalen. The route was provided via radio computed by DYNEMO for various scenarios of information update intervals and compliance rates. Within the paper this application of DYNEMO will be emphasised.
