Abstract

This short article presents the benefits of using an Automatic Equipment Identification (AEI) system for freight transport operators. Brief details of the CombiCom project are also presented. CombiCom (Combined Transport Communication system) is used to track and trace wagon and load unit movements for intermodal road/rail freight in real time. Both vehicles and load units are equipped with tags containing their individual identification information. AEI systems are installed alongside railway tracks. As a train passes, information on each vehicle and its load are read and then transferred to the processing centres, along with location information.
