Abstract

Vehicle impact tests at the University of Miami sponsored by The Aluminium Association Task Group on Medium Barriers have demonstrated the ability of aluminium to be used for effective medium barriers. Aluminium railings of the balanced and strong beam types were developed and tested. Both types met the Highway Research Board design objectives. It is recommended that the aluminium median barriers shown in Figures 3 and 16 be considered for adoption by highway design agencies. These barriers are non-proprietary, and the extruded shapes may be produced by a large number of aluminium manufacturers. They will perform as effective median barriers and eliminate costly and dangerous paint maintenance in the median area.
