Abstract

The inclusion of traffic information with in-vehicle navigation systems is a high priority for the general public. The TMC (traffic message channel) system is the only one present on a Europe-wide scale and will soon be supported by most of the navigation systems on the market. The potential of GATS (global automotive telematics standard) is also considered. Active traffic management systems are expected to become commonplace in cars as they may reduce the consequences of traffic congestion for the individual user. Detailed navigational map databases should become increasingly important and may eventually form part of driver assistance systems and multimodal trip planning.
