Abstract

The theoretical and experimental evidence related to the non-stationary behaviour of the pneumatic tire is reviewed in an examination of tire dynamics. Side-force transients as explained by the "running band" theory are discussed along with side force and aligning moment response to sinusoidal variations of steer angle and lateral velocity. The lag in side force build-up as represented by a point-contact model is also considered.
