Abstract

The Dutch Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management plans to dynamically adjust the amount of road lighting on motorways depending on the prevailing conditions. In all circumstances a sufficient amount of road lighting will be provided, given traffic and weather conditions, whereas the road will not be unnecessarily highly lit. This report describes phase 4 (final phase) of the `dynamic road lighting' research project. Based on the results from phase 3 of this project and from the outcome of a workshop with experts, recommendations and a proposal for a final light switching schedule are presented. The resulting proposal for a final switching schedule states that in darkness a normal level shall be applied, and that during favourable weather conditions and low traffic volumes the lower level shall be applied. For abstracts of the phases 1-3, see ITRD 890426, E203716 and E203717, respectively. See also ITRD D335635.
