Abstract

The performance of both high intensity gas discharge light sources (xenon) and halogen headlamps was evaluated. The requirements according to ECE regulation 112 for type approval are fulfilled for halogen headlamps. For xenon headlamps the results in all test points fulfilled the requirements for type approval according to regulation 98. Comparing the values for halogen and xenon headlamps the advantage of the xenon technique was clearly illustrated. Xenon light distribution had a wide spread and a very high range. The total luminous flux used to illuminate the road was more than doubled. Glare values remained at the same level. An increasing market share of xenon headlamps is predicted.
