Abstract

Automatic crash protection is required in every automobile sold in the United States from 1984. The passive restraints are required in all front seating positions, and can be either air bags or passive belts. Standard occupant-bucklet lap belts will continue to be required at most front and all rear seating positions. Economic implications are analyzed.
