Abstract

Regulations in Europe and the U.S.A. are presented and it is suggested the limits have often been imposed in order to protect the railways. It is hoped that Africa can avoid such political limits and after describing research in Sweden and the U.S.A. on the economics of road transport suggestions are made for maximum vehicle dimensions, weights and axle-bogie pressure for adoption in Africa. The article is based on a paper presented at the African Highway Conference, 1969.
