Abstract

The aim of the conference was to draft a community-based plan of action to reduce the incidence and tragedy of impaired driving. The major approaches to the drinking and driving problems used by the various jurisdictions represented by the speakers included: (1) lowering BAC levels; (2) higher MDA; (3) unpredictable, random BAC testing (A.L.E.R.T.); (4) graduated driver licencing program; (5) public education campaigns; (6) enforcement of laws related to the above in a consistent manner; (7) driver training and public eduction; and (8) strong citizen action groups.
