Abstract

1915 so-called near-miss accidents on level crossings were counted by railway drivers in 1971. A near miss was defined as the traversing of a level crossing when the safety installation was at work, or- in absence of this- the traversing when the train according to the judgement of the driver was already very close. With the aid of prediction-formula, by which the number of expected accidents on level crossings can be forecasted, it is possible to pursue a policy based on objective safety norms for example regarding the kind of level crossing safety measures.
