Abstract

Foreseeing the consequences when manoeuvring is easier when traffic situations are not too complex. This can be achieved by categorization of roads. Within one road category roads must be consistent, continuous, uniform and recognizable in their characteristics. The traffic area can be divided into residential areas and traffic areas. Residential areas can be differentiated by their different functions, traffic areas by the degree of separation of different road users. Residential areas are characterized by integration of road user types. At the lowest level division can be made between road sections. Isolated measures should not be taken but both areas should be considered at the same time. A comprehensive research project is required resulting in a proposition to rearrange the Dutch road-system systematically according to a number of road categories. In an early stage of the research the theoretical classification principles could be tested for reliability.
