This paper gives a summary of the traffic scenarios described in a Dutch Central Planning Bureau (CPB) study on `sustainable' development and the economy (spring 1996). The first part describes the main findings of the theoretical dissertation of the study and their relevancy for mobility. Next, the starting points and the government policy measures for traffic and transport in the `Base Scenario' and the three policy scenario's are given. The results shows that traffic and transport can be more `sustainable'. The government goals for 2010 can only be reached if two conditions are fulfilled: (1) society acceptance for the measures; and (2) the measures have to be taken at the community level. (A)
