Abstract

The average working time for truck drivers on international routes is currently 60 hours a week. The limitations in EC regulation 3820/85 are partly to blame for these excessive hours. This regulation merely sets maximum limits for driving hours and minimum limits for rest hours, disregarding all other professional activities in a day's work. Discussions were recently started on the subject of introducing new terminology: working hours. These should cover both driving hours and hours allocated to other activities.
