Abstract

This brochure aims to assist local authorities in the Netherlands in designing or promoting a storage policy. This policy is stimulated by the national Dutch government. The brochure also describes what exactly a bicycle storage policy entails. Information is given on both storage/parking bicycle facilities, and on the potential for applying them. A bicycle storage policy should be aimed at the prevention of both theft and vandalism. The advantages of this policy are as follows: (1) It can assist in greatly allaying the bicycle use reservations maintained by many people; and (2) it helps to increase the bicycle use attractiveness. One condition for ensuring the success of this is that local authorities cooperate with those involved in the best possible way. Within the framework of the Dutch Bicycle Masterplan Project, a lot of attention is also paid to the plight of the stationary bicycle. This will result, among other things, in a design manual to be published at the end of the year 1995. This manual will contain extensive information on the most suitable types and designs of bicycle storage facility for the various different location types. The two appendices accompanying the brochure give a foretaste of the design manual.
