Abstract

In the Netherlands, recumbent bicycles are relatively popular. Still, they are few in number. Recumbent cyclists are generally convinced of the advantages of their vehicle. In this article their opinion is investigated by giving an overview of the ergonomic aspects of recumbents and comparing them with upright bicycles. The results indicate that recumbents are generally more comfortable, more efficient and safer than upright bicycles. Disadvantages are the price, getting on and off takes slightly more time, looking over the shoulder may be more difficult and adjusting for leg length takes some effort.
