Abstract

From an economic point of view, innovations are important because they can lead to a greater economic growth. This article pays attention to the economic benefits of the container transport. This is done as an example of a previous innovation in the transport branch. With a recently developed method not only the primary effects but also the secondary effects are analyzed. The method is developed in research commissioned by the Dutch Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management. Two lines of enquiry have been followed. In the first, the importance of the container transport is given by means of macro economic indicators. It is the transport sector itself that is taken as starting point. The starting point of the second line of enquiry is the relationship between the transport sector and the other sectors in the economy. Here the logistic structure of costs is especially important. It is found that it is possible to analyze the macro economic benefits of the container transport with this method.
