Abstract

Interoperability is an important aspect for all parties involved in electronic toll collection. Traditionally these parties have been the operators and their equipment suppliers. This is now changing rapidly, with national systems separating the operator role from the issuer role, and involving authorities, clearing houses, trusted third parties for security, banking institutions and similar. The requirement to prove or qualify interoperability is higher than previously and examples from Australia to Norway are described.
