This paper describes experiments carried out on a highway driving simulator which investigates the effect of taking information from an on-board information display on the behavior of drivers. The maximum quantity of information which they can assimilate is also studied. In these experiments, congestion on an urban expressway is reproduced. Driver response to an on-board display is observed using recorded traces, GSR (Galvanic Skin Response) values, and movements of eyes recorded by an eye-mark recorder. The driver behavior criteria studied were: a) lateral position; b) intervals between cars; and c) driving speed. Drivers' pulse rate was also measured. (A)
