Abstract

Available data is examined for any changes in various traffic characteristics that could be ascribed to the recent fuel consumption measures. The data presented are in respect of accidents. casualties, vehicle speeds and travel times on rural roads, vehicle volume, mode of travel and occupancy of motor cars. It is concluded that the fuel conservation measures resulted in not only less travel but also in lower vehicle speed which was accompanied by a reduction in the accident rate as well as in the severity of the accidents.
