Abstract

The conspicuity of a sign is its ability to attract the attention of the driver. A series of experiments have shown that sign size and edge contrast play important roles in determining conspicuity. The background area immediately surrounding the sign is then crucial to its detection. An experiment has been conducted to determine whether the provision of a high contrast surround will increase.
