Abstract

The area of 230.000 inhabitants covered by the Odense University Hospital was investigated for the effect of the seat belt mandatory, instituted by January the 1st, 1976, which brought about an increase is seat belt usage from 20% to 72%. The analysis showed a decline from 244 to 211 casualties after seat belt mandatory, corresponding to a decline of 18% in the effected rate. The analysis showed a high protective effect of the belt against head lesions, especially for car passengers.
