Abstract

Wide fluctuations of traffic volume during peak hours affect the performance of fixed time traffic signals because queuing is more likely and random delay increases. The extent of volume variability was studied using 5- min counts from ten intersections in Singapore. It was found that the degree of fluctuation varies considerably from site to site.Normal distribution gives the best approximation of the observed vehicle count frequency distribution.
