Abstract

The research reported here concerns the effect on traffic safety of turning off external illumination on certain non- action overhead guide signs on three demonstration routes in California. A non- action overhead sign is a freeway sign that gives information about upcoming lane assignments, exits, and interchanges that do not require an immediate action from a motorist. For almost all of the locations where illumination was turned off, there were not adverse safety effects.
