Abstract

The accident rate on 4-, 6- and 8-lane freeways increases with increasing ADT (average daily traffic) The rate of increase is for: 4-lane 0.240 acc/MVM (million vehicle miles); 6-lane 0.094 acc/MVM; 8-lane 0.078 acc/MVM per 10.000 vehicle increase in ADT. For any given ADT less lanes have more accidents than more lanes.
