Abstract

The purpose of the report is to describe and to estimate the influence which modifications in the organisation of schools, via changes in the nature and magnitude of mobility, will have on the traffic safety of children. Only primary schools are included here. Besides the measures already existing for improving the safety of the journey to school, the adaptation of the school area, education and information, other measures can be considered. The times at which schools begin can be changed in such a way that they do not coincide with peak hour traffic or, especially in winter, with twilight or darkness. The stimulation of staying in schools between morning and afternoon lessons, so that mobility is decreased can be enhanced or a continued time table can be introduced. These latter measures, which are discussed in the report, can make a difference of 130 severely injured children less per year in the netherlands.
