Abstract

An inherently low cost array-based pyroelectric detector technology is described with applications in the above ground detection of vehicles and pedestrians. The achievement of a low entry cost to the kind of technology hitherto employed predominantly for military sensing applications is achieved by the use of detector technology and manufacturing techniques that are optimised for the very high volume commercial detection market. Specific reference is made to two key applications: above ground volumetric Puffin Crossing kerbside detection and above ground multi-lane stop-line detection; both represent advances in intelligent traffic monitoring and transportation systems.
