Abstract

The broad aim of this study was to analyse recent Victoria accident and traffic data, in order to determine possible reasons for the 1974 downturn of occupant fatalities, particular reference to the effectiveness of the rural speed limit. On the basis of study results it can be concluded that the speed limit was an important causal fact. The subsequent upturn in 1975 indicates that the speed legislation had short term effectiveness.
