Abstract

Based on data from 1982 through 1987 FARS, motorcycle helmets are estimated to be 29% effective in preventing fatalities. A matched- pairs technique was used to produce the effectiveness estimates of motorcycle helmets by comparing the probability of fatalities of drivers and passengers under helmeted and unhelmeted conditions.
