Abstract

This study examined the effectiveness of various open-graded pavements inimproving snowy/icy winter roads by maintaining the skid resistance. Tests were conducted in the laboratory, a winter test track, and with field surveys on roads in service. It was found that open-graded pavement is not effective in improving all winter roads, but is effective in improving winter roads when black ice forms, because it maintains a rough surface texture under such conditions.
