Abstract

DOT has issued a new standard for the safety belt warning system will be required on automobiles manufactured for sale after August 15, 1973. The new standard includes a logic and starter/interlock system with a non-detachable lap/shoulder belt combination and an inertia reel on the shoulder belt. This research was conducted to determine the effectiveness of the various components of the new and current seat belt systems, and to assess drivers' attitudes toward these systems.
